Tenant Organizer


 

The Syracuse Tenants Union is looking to hire an experienced tenant organizer to build tenant power in marginalized communities in Syracuse, where predatory landlords predominate. We take collective action and fight for legislative change in an effort to change the balance of power between landlords and tenants.  

The Syracuse Tenants Union has been organizing, educating, and empowering renters in the city of Syracuse for the past three years. Our small and dynamic grassroots organization is supported by dedicated volunteers who field calls for STU. 

In addition, we also play a pivotal role in fighting for change in legislation locally and statewide to create an even playing field for tenants to fight back. This position will be supervised by Syracuse Tenants Union Founder and Co-Founder. The organizer will work in partnership with the STOP! Coalition, Housing Justice 4 All, and other tenant-centered groups. The position is hybrid remote. Salary is low $30s plus benefits.

Qualifications & Experience: 

● Must have some community organizing experience. 

● Familiarity with housing issues and tenant organizing is preferred.

● Demonstrated computer literacy and proficiency, including word processing,  spreadsheets, databases, social media, Google drive package, Signal and Canva or similar. 

● Demonstrated commitment to social justice. 

● Familiarity and experience working with marginalized communities.  

● Fluency in other languages is a plus.

Responsibilities: 

● Organize tenants at a building-wide and neighborhood level to develop joint strategies and tactics to address housing-related issues, including repairs,  harassment, and discrimination. 

● Research and identify potential organizing targets—landlords with a track record of serious neglect of their properties.

● Organize canvassing in the community, including facilitating workshops and trainings on tenant's rights.

● Educate community residents on tenants’ rights and anti-displacement strategies.

● Mobilize tenants for demonstrations, rallies, and forums.

● Foster the development of tenant leaders through training and one-on-one support.

● Attend committee meetings and work in collaboration with coalition partners.

● Strong interest in working in low-income and culturally diverse communities.

● Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a team-oriented  environment 

● Resourcefulness and a talent for problem-solving 

● Persistence and determination 

● Graphic art, design skills, and web design experience are a plus

● Willingness to work evenings and occasional weekends
