To expand tenant protections, we need Good Cause Eviction in Syracuse!

Tenants across Syracuse experience persistent substandard and unsafe housing conditions. Tenants who try to get conditions fixed are often evicted instead. Passing Good Cause Eviction legislation would help change that.

Good Cause Eviction would:

  • Prevent 'no-cause' or retaliatory evictions by requiring that landlords prove they have a "good cause" to evict someone;

  • Prevent landlords from filing an eviction if they have a history of intimidating a tenant or if they have an open code violation at any of their properties;

  • Give tenants the right to renew their lease and remain in their home;

  • Protect tenants from 'unconscionable' rent hikes (any increase over 5% per year could be considered unconscionable)

By expanding tenant protections, Good Cause Eviction would make it easier for tenants to organize with their neighbors and demand better living conditions. It would allow tenants to take action – like calling code enforcement – without fear of retaliation.
